B&O 173 is a Camelback Tenwheeler (4-6-0) on display in very tight quarters at the National Museum of Transportation, Kirkwood, Missouri. It was built in 1873 in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's Mt. Clare shops. It has 50" drivers and weighs about 77,000 lbs. The steam dome is inside the cab. The locomotive has two square sand boxes, one before and one behind the cab. Note the sloping firebox with the bell mounted at its top and behind the cab. The overhanging roof between the tender and the firebox door is the fireman's position. | |
