The Baltimore & Providence 17 is a straight-boilered 4-4-0 American built by the B&P in 1858. It is on display at the Museum of Transporation in St. Louis, Missouri. This early locomotive is unusual in several respects. The cylinders are inside the frame. The running boards form a platform around the entire boiler with a safety fence on the outside of this platform. The steam dome is hexagonal and the sand dome is rectangular. Also notice the unusual columns to which the bell is attached. I don't know if these columns serve any other purpose. |
